I recently got a new HDD. I hooked it up as a slave and used Drive Image 7.0 to copy my drive C to the E partition on the new drive using the app included to clone your drive, OS and all to a new one. I ed to make the E drive bootable, according to the directions, as well. I then switched the jumper on the new drive to the Master setting, hooked up the Master IDE cable to it and tried to boot up from the new drive. However that isn't working. I entered the BIOS and confirmed that it is recognizing the new drive as the Master. How do I boot from the new drive? I want to put the old drive in a USB case and use it as portable storage.

Well, it looks like I'll be out of town for a few days, my Dad is having heart surgery tomorrow, so I'll be heading up to help him and my Mom for a few days.
Hopefully I can get the hard drive issues sorted out when I get back. Family has to take priority.
Thanks everyone for all the insight, I'll be checking in on the boards from my folks PC

Thanks for your support, guys. My dad had angioplasty today, now he has to wait a few weeks before he can have an anuerysm [sp] repaired, which is what put him in the hospital to begin with. Anyway, thanks again, I should be back home in a couple or three days. Man, my dad has a LOT of CRAP on his PC! of course every time I clean things up and a few days later he gets some piece of spyware he calls me up asking why I put it there What are you going to do? Gotta take care of the parents though.

Boot with a Windows 98 startup disk or CD.

Run fdisk.

Choose option 2.

Set the partition that you want to boot to as active.

Escape from fdisk.

Run fdisk /mbr.

Remove the disk.

Restart.

Done.

Do you realise what you've titled this thread? "Hard Drive Migration" what do these do exactly? crawl out of your computer and migrate down south for the Winter?? So... what, they come back and they now run faster because they've had to endure the cold and have had a work out sesh. Yeah so "My hard drive came back with scratches all over him because a polar bear attacked him and then half-devoured him - so... i've had to kick my hard drive out". *sigh* sorry this post is quite utterly pointless and irrelevant. Still.

I'm back home now. Dad is doing well, though now he has to stay home for a few weeks until he can have the second surgery.
As far as the HDD issue, I've reformatted the new drive, updated everything on my original drive, defragged, AV'ed, spyware clean etc... now I'm going to try this again. Keep your fingers crossed

Well, the only way I'm able to post this is by booting up with a Knoppix CD I burned a while back. I repartitioned my original drive so I could make a compressed backup to the new partition with DI7, but now I can't boot up at all, normal, safemode, anything. I guess I'll do a fresh install of Windows on the new drive and then try to figure a waay to get all my data off the old drive. This isn't exactly how I planned to spend my vacation.
Yrag, I tried booting with the DOS setup disk from the WD site [with the new drive as master] but still can't get past teh Intel screen.
